Mechanical shafts are heavy and strong, mainly designed for high speed or heavy duty applications when the roll must run true and concentric.
Mechanical chucks are more common, especially the "Autolock" type, that lock up and grip when tension is applied to the web. This type of chuck will operate in both right and left hand directions equally well, so does not have to be supplied in "sets".
